ON A GRAND

SCALE

The Atlas Mountains give walkers and trekkers of all abilities the opportunity to see Morocco’s landscape at its magnificent best...

The Atlas Mountains stretch for 1,500 miles through Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, protecting Africa’s Mediterranean and Atlantic coastlines from the searing climatic extremities of the Sahara Desert.

The High Atlas range spans Morocco and includes Jbel Toubkal – the highest mountain in North Africa at 4,167m above sea level, and part of Toubkal National Park. This national park, around 20 miles south of Tigmi, offers a great range of of hiking trails through the flora and fauna. There are still many Berber communities living in the Atlas Mountains whose way of life uses much the same methods and materials as their ancestors.

Also in Toubkal National Park, you’ll find Oukaimeden – North Africa’s largest ski resort. Although the season is short (mid-January to mid-February is usually the best time for good snow), when conditions are good, there are around of up 13 miles of runs, the longest being nearly 2 miles. And because there are no ski lifts to the really impressive terrains, you can hire a mule to help you get there (such is the Moroccan way of life.)
