Bring on the bustle

Unpredictable, manic and utterly charming – spending a day losing yourself  in Marrakech is an unforgettable experience

In terms of atmosphere, the tranquility of Tigmi could not be further from the bustle of Marrakech. Thankfully, The Red City – as Marrakech is known – is just fifteen miles from Tigmi and so ideal for a day trip. (All our guests are welcome to use our free shuttle bus that drives to and from Marrakech three times a day.)

Over a million people live in Marrakech, and on arriving in Djemaa el-Fna (the main square) you’d be forgiven for thinking that every one of them has come out to greet you. This busy square is always alive with acrobats, snake-charmers, dancers and musicians. Buy a water to quench your thirst or an ancient Berber potion to improve your relationship.

If shopping is your thing, then dart north into the souks. This labyrinth of covered market streets is teeming with lively sellers and lost shoppers. Bartering on price over a mint tea is not uncommon. And if you get good at the haggle, you’ll grab a bargain on shoes, bags, lamps, rugs, silk, cotton, pottery and plates. In fact, pretty much anything – including the traditional Berber sink.

If you prefer your prices fixed and your shopping a little more boutique, then leave the charms of the old city for the new town. Here you’ll find casinos, art galleries, and plenty of places to enjoy dinner and drinks. Alternatively, head back to the main square after sunset as many food stalls open, turning Djemaa el-Fna it into a massive (and busy) open-air restaurant.
